Midnight Clouds is a study in depth. The falls are blue violet, ringed by a darker blue halo, and through the center run broken rays of light blue to white that break up like light through cloud. A yellow signal sits at the base of each. The style arms are white with blue crests, and the whole flower is finished with wavy edges that catch light along the margins.

Registered in 2010 by Bob Bauer and John Coble of Ensata Gardens in Michigan. It's a sibling of 'Wave Action', which we also grow — both came out of the same cross, and they make an excellent pair: matched in height and bloom time, opposite in coloring.

Standing 36 inches with midseason bloom.

Japanese irises want moisture, especially through spring bloom season, and slightly acidic soil — they won't tolerate lime. Full sun gives the best performance. Hardy in zones 4–8.
